Curriculum

The curriculum is structured into 20 meetings over the course of the school year, including 2 community service projects to take place before the last meeting. Each lesson has a theme, which echoes throughout the meeting and follows a consistent activity structure of opening with an Ice Breaker, followed by Exercise 1/Exercise 2, and closing with Reflection.

The Ice Breakers aim to establish comfort and security for each girl to express herself, to interact with her peers in age-appropriate play, and to connect with the volunteers in a meaningful and non-traditional way.

The Exercises are designed to appeal to a wide range of adolescent interests and are structured to maintain steady engagement throughout the entire 1 to 1.5 hour meetings. These exercises range in context from physical, to creative, to intellectual. The lesson plans also contain suggestions for alternative exercises to accommodate variation between clubs.

The Reflections allow for discussion, particularly if the Exercise portion lacked such opportunity, as well as journaling. This portion of the curriculum contains prompts for journaling; however, the volunteers are also encouraged to develop their own discussion and reflection prompts unique to the group and their engagement with the Ketiko Kit.

The Notes section is in the hard copy of the curriculum, specifically for the volunteers to write their reflections on the meeting. These Notes will later be used in Monitoring and Evaluation of the program for modifications and improvements to the curriculum.

Each Ketiko Kit also comes with a list of suggested projects. Each Keti Club will decide whether to implement one of those projects as their first service project or create a new one. By the second project, the volunteers and girls are encouraged to develop a service project unique to their community. The curriculum is innately flexible, encouraging community and participant ownership while still providing structure.
